The Bhagavata Purana describes Narada's spiritual enlightenment: In his previous birth Narada was a gandharva (angelic being) who had been cursed to be born on an earthly planet due to some offense. He was born to a maid-servant of saintly priests (brahmins). The Brahmins were pleased with their services and blessed them by allowing to eat some of their sacred food which was offered to their lord, Vishnu as 'Prasad. Gradually Narada received further blessings from these sages and heard them discussing many spiritual topics. After his mother's demise, he roamed in search of enlightenment to understand the 'Supreme Absolute Truth'. He sat under a tree for meditation (yoga),
in a tranquil forest ,concentrating on the paramatma form of Vishnu
within his heart as he had been taught by Brahmins. Later on, Narad experienced a vision
wherein Lord Vishnu(Narayan) appeared before him and said. "though
you have seen me at this very moment, you may not see my divine form
until you
die". After instructing Narada in this manner, Vishnu then disappeared from his sight. The boy came out of his meditation thrilled as well as disappointed.
