A demon called Bhasmasur
was blessed by Lord Shiva that 'whoever he touches on the head will go to
ashes'.As he started feeling the strongest and unbeatable,he went out of
control and started touching heads of innocent ones to ashes, without any
rhyme or reason. Finally Lord Vishnu finished him.
Durasad was son of Bhasmasur who, like his
father pleased Shiva with a long meditation and achieved the control on
all the three worlds(Trilok)with the blessing of immortality.Sage Narada
wanted to finish him for his ill behavier, so he pinched him saying that
he can not take over Kashi, which belongs to Lord Shiva, hence he will not
be called the ruler of the trilok
Durasad immediately rushed to Kashi with
the intension of attack.Worried Narada soon approached Goddess Parvati and
explained to her about everything.Narada further advised her that she will
have to give birth to a child who can defeat Durasad.
Narada also advised her to chant the 'Aum'
Mantra from the soul.As Parvati chanted the mantra, a child was born with
four hands and a trunk, who was Shree Ganesha.Parvati requested him to
finish the demon Durasad.
Ganesha, seating on a lion went to Kashi
,attacked Durasad, knocked him down and dumped him in the ground since he
had a blessing of immortality.
Lord Shiva established a Ganesha shrine
here and the idol is known as Dhundiraj Ganesh.
