Tripura,the son of the Sage
Grutsamad was blessed by Ganesha and with the superpower he started
attacking the gods, humans and Patal-lok.He went on conquring everyone and
finally went to the mountain Kailsh, the abode of Lord Shiva and shook the
whole mountain vigorously.
Impressed with his power,Lord Shiva told him to ask for any
blessing.Tripura asked for the possession of Mountain Kailasa.Shiva
fulfilled his desire and shifted to Mountain Mandar.Unsatisfied Tripurasur
went on troubling the sages who ran to Sage Narada for help.
Sage Narada advised them to pray
Ganesha.Ganesha agreed to relieve them.Ganesha then disguised himself in
to a brahmin man and went to Amravati where Tripurasur was
settled.Tripura was attracted with the dimonds and pearls which Ganesha
had.
Ganesha gifted him all.Tripura was
pleased with the brahmin and told him to demand whatever he
desired.Ganesha demanded the Chintamani from Kailasa Mountain.Tripurasur
went to Kailasa, however Lord Shiva refused part with the Chintamani. There
was a big war and Shiva got defeated.
Shiva asked Sage Narada the reason for
his defeat.Narada clarified that Shiva did not remember and pray Omkar
Ganesh before the war.Soon Shiva sat for meditation by chanting 'Aum'.
From
the sound of Aum, Omkar Ganesh appeared with an unique form of five faces
and ten hands. The Omkar Ganesh passed on a special Mantra to Shiva and by
chanting the Mantra "Aun Gan Ganapataye Namaha",Lord Shiva released an
arrow on Tripurasur and finished him.
Lord Shiva established a MahaGanapati
shrine. This shrine is about 45 kms. from Pune in Maharashtra.
