The son of Bhim(Mahabharat)
named Rukmangad had gone in jungles. When he was thursry HE approached the Ashram(dwelling) of Sage Vachakkanavi. The Sage was
away but his wife Mukunda was present who was attracted by Rukmangad.
She offered herself to him but rukmangad
refused to the illicit relation.Irate Mukunda cursed him and he became a
leper.Rukmangad later on went to Chintamani Nagar and had a sacred bath to
clear him from the disease.
Lord Indra who liked the beauty of
Mukunda, came to know of this incident and in the disguise of Rukmangad he
went to Mukunda and enjoyed the ecstatic pleasure with her.Later
on,Mukunda delivered a baby boy.Sage Vachakkanavi was not aware of the
happenings.
The boy was named as Grutsamad. The boy
grew up and was in a group of Sages when he underestimated
the Sage Atri-Hrishi.Angry Atri-Hrishi insulted him by calling him the illicit son of Rukmangad.Irated Grutsamad cursed his mother,Mukunda. In
return the angry mother
cursed Grutsamad that he will give birth to demons.
Grutsamad was restless and went to the
Pushpak jungle, stood on one foot and meditated and prayed Ganesha for five
thousand years.Ganesha was pleased with his devotion and blessed him with
the power of defeating anyone except Lord Shiva.
Overwhelmed by the blessing,Grutsamad
established a shrine of Shree Ganesha and named as 'VaradaVinayak',since
he is 'giver of blessings'(Varada).
