Gayatri Mantra
ll Gayatri Mantra ll
Gayatri mantra is also known as Savitri
and Ved-Mata, that is " The Mother of Vedas ".The Mantra has meaning as follows,- It is a highly revered Mantra, based on Vedic Sanskrit verse from Rigveda. The Gayatri Mantra is chanted repeatedly very widely in vedic literature. It is recommended by many Hindu Sacred Texts like Bhagwad Gita etc.The mantra is an important part of the upanayanam ceremony for younsters in Hinduism and is recited by Brahmin men,as their daily rituals. As per the Brahmins' traditional practice the Gayatri Mantra is addressed to God as the divine life-giver, symbolized by Savitr (the sun).It is beleived that reciting the Gayatri at sunrise or sunset, bestows wisdom and enlightenment, from the Sun, through the energy of the universe. A boy at the age of eight years or more undergoes thread ceremony
when the Brahmin gives the lessons of Gayatri Mantra. The Arya Samaj
later on opined that recitation of the mantra was not limited to only
males, but women could rightfully be taught both the Vedas and the
Gayatri Mantra. So nowdays even women have widely started reciting the
Gayatri Mantra.
'Bhur' the earth, 'Bhuvah' the planets and 'Swah' means the Galaxy. The 'Naad' ie sound created due to the rotation of earth, planets and galaxies is "AUM" Rishi Vishvamitra, while in his meditation, experienced this sound and he explained the same to other sages and rishis.Hence this sound "Aum" was agreed to be the name of the God,since this sound is available in all the three periods of time.
"Gita" also mentions that,
"Omiti
ekaksharam brahma", meaning that the name of the almighty God is Aum,
which contains only one syllable. Invocation Gayatrî Mantra recitation is often prefaced as a short invocation or a long invocation. In either of the invocations,we begin the recitation by using the divine symbol 'Aum' to salute the formless and nameless Almighty Power. * Short Invocation- In this type we enjoy saying that Aum is Bhur(earth), Aum is Bhuva(planets), Aum is Swaha(galaxy). So,Aum is everything in this world. The terms bhur, bhuvas, suvaha (mahâ vyâhritis) are invocations to honor the stages of our existence and to call to our aid the presiding deities of the three planes in which we live our ordinary life: the physical, astral and mental planes. The three lokas (bhûr, bhuvas, suvaha) are the bîja (seed) mantrams of the devatâs called Agni, Vâyu and âditya who are being invoked to assist in our transformation. * Long Invocation: In the long invocation there is mention of the seven 'Lokas', or planes of existence. The recitation is to call those 'Lokas' to help in our transformation and realization. This chant is done in the ancient traditional Vedic manner which is continued further from generation to generation for thousands of years. The recitation of the 'Lokas',performed with correct pronunciation and accents prepares one for the reciting of the Gayatri Mantra. The seven lokas, are as ubder-
The invocation is followed by proper closing which can be done in two ways as follows,- * Short Closing:
This short closing phrase is a simple yet a powerful meditation. The progression of the "bh" sound gradually becomes more effective, transcending all the worlds, and culminating in the nameless, formless essence,Aum.
This long but powerful closing salutes the basic forms of the Almighty-The water the Light, the Sound and the Mind. |
