Amarnath Amarnath is 145 km east of Srinagar in Kashmir and is considered to be one of the major Hindu Dhams. The pilgrims trek from Pahalgam to these caves and worship the great ice Lingam. The ice Siva-ling here, changes size with the seasons, and also as the moon waxes and wanes. Every year on the full moon day of July-August (Shravan),the Siva-linga attains its maximum height about 6',when there is a festival at this cave temple. The cave is about 150 feet high and 90 feet long. It is beleived that Lord Shiva first appeared on this day. There are four or five ice formations that resemble the figures of different gods,in the cave. The biggest figure is regarded as Shiva (Amarnath). On the left and right sides of the ling are ice formations, of Ganesh and Parvati,Bhairav respectively.
This is the cave which was chosen by Bhole Shankar for narrating the secrets of immortality and creation of Universe to Maa Parvati.Ma Parvati insisted that she may be told that secret.Shiva chose Amarnath Cave for this. Lord Shiva took Samadhi on the Deer Skin to ensure that no living being is able to hear the immortal secret. He created rudra and spread fire to eliminate every living thing in and around the holy cave . Later,he started narrating the secret of immortality to Ma Parvati. However, one egg which was lying beneath the Deer skin remained protected, which was non living and was protected by Shiva -Parvati Asan (carpet). The pair of pigeons which were born out of this egg became immortal having listened to the secret of immortality (Amar Katha).
