Mathura city,is located at a distance of 146 km south-east of Delhi and 59 km north-west of Agra (India). Mathura, a sacred place, on the river Yamuna is the birt place of Lord Krishna,the incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Mathura is one of the most ancient place of India,which has a refernace in the Epic Ramayana.Mathura was ruled by the Maurya Empire and the Sunga dynasty. Archaeological proof seems to point that, by 100 BC, Jains used to live in Mathura.

The art form of Mathura and its culture reached its summit under the Kushan dynasty who had declared it as their capital. Mahmud of Ghazni in 1018 ransacked many of its temples and later on was the place destroyed by Sikandar Lodhi.

Mathura was captured by the Jat kings of Bharatpur but consequently annexed by the Marathas.
 

                                          

             Major Attractions In Mathura

Jama Masjid

It was constructed by Nabir Khan in 1661 A.D. which has four lofty minarets, with brightly colored plaster mosaic.

Vishram Ghat

After slaying the tyrant Kansa,Lord Krishna had taken rest at this place.

Dwarkadheesh Temple

This is the main temple of the town.which was Built in the year,1814.The best time to visit the temple is on the days of Holi, Janmashtami and Diwali ,which are grandly celebrated.

Archaeological Museum

This museum has the finest collection of rare items from the Gupta and Kushan period (400 BC to 1200AD) and is Located at Dampier Park.

Mansarovar

The bird sanctuary, about five acres in size, is located a few kms across the Yamuna River.It is said that the lake, or 'sarovar', was formed from the tears of Shri. Radha, while in emotional state of mind for Krishna.

                                 

Govardhan Hill

Govardhan is formed in the shape of a peacock,whereas,Radha Kund and Syam Kund are the eyes and Dan Ghati is its long neck with Mukharavind is the mouth and Punchari is its back and tail feathers.

It is believed that the hill was cursed by Pulastya Muni and is sinking daily very gradually.

Kusum Sarovar

Kusum Sarovar is the best swimming spot in Mathura,which is about 25 minutes walk from Radha Kund.The gopis used to pick flowers,here, for Krishna.

Holy Tirthas

There are 25 holy tirthas (bathing places or ghats) in Mathura.These holy tirthas are mostly located about 400 m south of Vishram Ghat.The 12 ghats in the south extend to Moksha Ghat.

Names of many of the ghats are changed now.However, Asi Ghat, Prayaga Ghat, Chakra Tirtha Ghat, Krishna Ganga, Dhruva Ghat and Visram Ghat are still known by the same names.

 By Air Nearest airport is Kheria Airport,Agra and 50 KM from Mathura.New Delhi. IGI Airport is 150 KM from Mathura.
By Railway Mathura is a major railways junction.The journey from Delhi takes about 2 - 3 hours , while from Agra the trip takes about one hour. Most of the southernand western trains stop at Mathura.Almost all major trains from Delhi and Agra stop at Mathura.
By Road Mathura is situated in between Delhi and Agra on National Highway 2, about 150 km south of Delhi and 50 km north of Agra.Many state transport departments busses are running through Mathura.
